COURSE DESCRIPTION
Orchos Chaim offers a complete program of study that will provide its students with the
opportunity to develop into fully independent Torah Jews. This specifically designed program
will give our graduates the knowledge, ability, and desire to continue meaningful study wherever
they go and in whatever careers they may pursue.
- HALACHA - Instruction in the understanding and practical application of Jewish
law with an emphasis on giving the student a working knowledge and an ability to access
relevant reference sources. The students will first be given a general overview of Jewish Law
and then introduced to the study of Mishna Brura. In addition, selected topics in parts of
Choshen Mishpat and Yore Deah will be taught including the Laws of : Business,
Employee-Employer Relations, Tort, Taking and Receiving Interest, Borrowing and Lending,
Giving Charity , Proper Speech (Loshon Hora), Honoring Parents, and Kashrus.
- HASHKAFA - Topics fundamental to Judaism and human existence will be
examined through the probing minds of some of our greatest thinkers. Such basic works as:
Mishle, the Siddur, the Shmone Prakim of the Rambam, Kuzari, Derech Hashem, Daas Tvunos,
Nefesh HaChaim, Michtav M' Eliyahu, and Alei Shur, will give our students a strong practical and
philosophical grounding in Jewish thought.
- MUSSAR - Students will be introduced to the world of mussar and given the tools to
open up these wellsprings of life. The mussar classics are invaluable works for guiding the
individual to probe and examine himself, and then to grow and improve.
- PACE (Personal And Community Enrichment) - PACE has been developed to
prepare our students for success in both their private and public lives. Classses such as:
Preparing for and Building a Successful Marriage; Raising Children; Interpersonal Relationships;
Outreach; Community Involvement and Responsibility will be taught by experts in their fields.
These classes will give our students the skills necessary to interact with those around them and
to lead happy and full lives.
- TALMUD - Begining and intermediate level Talmud will be taught with an emphasis on
a clear understanding of the text and its early commentaries. The students will then be
introduced to and taught the proper use of the later commentaries. In addition, a special shiur
will be given periodically by one of Jerusalem's leading Talmedai Chachamim, showing the
boundless depth, breath and beauty of the Talmud.
The students will also cover several tractates of Mishnayos on a more basic level in order
to acquire a broader scope of knowledge and competence in this type of study.
- TANACH - The students will be introduced to the study of TANACH with its classic
commentaries through regular classes and guided independent study. An emphasis will be
placed on not only understanding the text in all its richness, but its eternal relevance and
message to us today.
