Question 11.6.13:
Death and Burial: Must the Chevra Kedisha be family members?

Answer:

The burial society ("Chevrah Kadisha" is literally "Holy Friends") is never the deceased's family. Rather, they are a group of volunteers who know the laws, customs, and the simple pragmatics of preparing the deceased for burial, and who organize cemetary space, the pragmatics of the funeral, etc. They need to be people who have experience, and really can't be a different group for each deceased.

The FAQ is a collection of documents that is an attempt to answer questions that are continually asked on the soc.culture.jewish family of newsgroups. It was written by cooperating laypeople from the various Judaic movements. You should not make any assumption as to accuracy and/or authoritativeness of the answers provided herein. In all cases, it is always best to consult a competent authority--your local rabbi is a good place to start.
