  Hebrew Language Instruction

Central to the College's curriculum is the mastery of Hebrew—the language of classical and modern texts. Many courses require a substantive knowledge of Hebrew, while a number of courses are taught solely in Hebrew.

Through a four-semester Hebrew language sequence, students gain the ability to read and study Hebrew texts, including biblical, rabbinic, medieval and modern sources. Specialized courses enable students to develop advanced reading skills for the study of classical Jewish texts, ancient and medieval, as well as Hebrew literature.

The core four-semester sequence is available for undergraduate credit but may be taken in tandem with graduate study. Proficiency in Hebrew IV is a prerequisite for core-text courses in the MA and MJEd curricula. Hebrew language instruction is also available online and through the Summer Institute's Mekhina program.

In addition to classical language instruction, the college offers New England's most comprehensive modern Hebrew program through its nine-level Ulpan.
